Halloween, a tour to the Creepiest Places

Old prisons look creepy in the day. In the dark, they can really spook you. Perhaps it's those rusted locks, the way cell doors sound when they clank shut, the stairs where people don't tread anymore. Add a hangman's noose or an electric chair, and you have a real chills up your back shudder.

Pair a trip to a prison on Halloween and you're in for some screaming good times.

Or, if you can't swing by one of these prisons before Halloween, take in a night tour when you get the chance. Each of the these three prisons featured offers night tours year round. And each have tales of being haunted.

Try the Mansfield Reformatory. In its heyday, the prison was a reformatory for boys but was closed in the 1980s.

This goreous gothic building that looks both elegant and forbodding even in daylight acquired its most recent fame as the setting for the movie The Shawshank Redemption. Through Halloween weekend there is a haunted house here that is a guareenteed screamfest. People under 13-years of age are not allowed.

The reformatory's Night of the Evil Dead haunted house experience takes in most of the prison that is now a museum. I met some folks who had been on the tour the night before I visited here during the day. They loved it and mentioned several times how they felt hoarse from screaming.

Alcatraz Island is in San Franciso. Add in the tales of the guys who tried to escape by swimming for the distant shore but never made it, and you have another creepy detail. There's also the soliary confinement cell where you can experience the dark in a way that is different than perhaps you are used to.

The night tours at Alcatraz are Thursday through Monday and include special talks around certain themes. How about the Shadow of Death? There are others from which to choose. A bonus of Alcatraz's night tours is the view of San Francisco.

The view was terrific by day. If you do go on this tour any time of the year, whether during the day or night, make sure you bring warm clothes. Even in the summer it gets chilly.

You can also try the night torchlight tour of the Fremantle Prison in Perth, Australia. The Fremantle Prison, built in 1850 by convicts, was a place where British citizens who committed crimes were sent along with people who already lived in Australia and were naughty. Later the prison was used as a military prison. The night view of this prison is quite imposing.

Halloween

Halloween, is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. Halloween, like any other festival is inspired through traditions that have transpired through ages from one generation to another. The term Halloween is shortened from All-hallow-evening, as it is the eve of "All Hallows' Day", which is now also known as All Saints' Day. The Halloween owes it's origin to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. Halloween is celebrated in several countries of the Western world, most commonly in Ireland (where it originated), the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, and occasionally in parts of Australia. In Sweden the All Saints' official holiday takes place on the first Saturday of November.

On Halloween night, adults and children dress up as creatures from the underworld (e.g., ghosts, ghouls, zombies, witches and goblins), light bonfires, and enjoy spectacular fireworks displays. The prime Halloween activities in the Halloween party include trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses", carving Jack-o'-lanterns, reading scary stories and watching horror movies. The houses are frequently adorned with turnips carved into scary faces; lights or candles are sometimes placed inside the carvings to present an eerie effect.

The carved Halloween pumpkin or the jack-o-lantern as it is popularly know in the United States of America, is lit by a candle inside and is one of Halloween's most prominent symbols. These carved pumpkin first Originated in Europe and were initially carved from a turnip or rutabaga. The Celts believed that the head was the most powerful part of the body containing the spirit and the knowledge, so they used the "head" of the vegetable to frighten off any superstitions.

People also love to celebrate Halloween by sending Halloween cards and Halloween greeting cards as a part of their Halloween wishes and Halloween invitation. During this part of the year, the sale of the Halloween cards, Halloween postcards and the Halloween greeting cards are on the rise. Although the commercialization of Halloween did not start until the 20th century, beginning perhaps with Halloween postcards with hundreds of varieties and designs which were most popular amongst the Halloween ideas. Halloween Horror Nights, which is celebrated at the Universal Orlando Resort, is a Halloween event presented annually. The tradition began in 1991 in Universal Studios Florida with only one haunted house and since then it has continued annually for 18 years to become one of the largest Halloween events in the United States.

Halloween has over the years become a very prominent festival of celebration of horror all over the world. Read more!
